Ask a Question

How do I maximise the PV power without disabling the incoming grid power?

Issue:
XW systems with the grid support feature turned off will power loads from the grid, see solution 1118 for more information
To overcome this, the Grid Support feature must be ENABLED

Definition of Grid Support - "Assist the Grid"

Product Line:
Conext XW/XW+ Series Inverter/Chargers and MPPT Solar Charge Controllers

Environment:
Grid-tie battery backup systems

Cause:
System isn't using enough of the incoming PV power in a grid-tie setup

Resolution:
1. Firstly, please check and ensure most recent firmware. This is how:

On the SCP (System Control Panel), SYSTEM STATUS (HOME) screen, press ENTER once.
SELECT DEVICE - SYSTEM SETTINGS - VIEW DEVICE INFO
Use the ARROW DOWN to scroll through the pages to view the firmware for all connected devices.

Required: Ensure the MPPT60 is at 1.05.00 BN6 and the XW6048 / 4548 / 4024  is 1.07.00 BN3
If the firmware is not as above, a firmware upgrade is required.
If your firmware is up to date, proceed to step 2.

2. Perform a Restore to Defaults so that we can set up the inverter as new.

On the SCP, SYSTEM STATUS (HOME) screen, press ENTER once.
SELECT DEVICE - XW6048 - ADVANCE SETTINGS - RESTORE DEFAULTS

3. Ensure the following settings (If I do not mention a setting, it means it's a custom, default or not applicable value):

BASIC settings
Inverter - enabled
Search Mode - disabled
Grid Support - enabled (a must)
Mode - operating

ADVANCED settings

CHARGER SETTINGS
Ensure charge cycle is set for 2StgNoFlt; the rest of the settings are custom based on your battery

GRID SUPPORT
Grid Support Volts - 64 V
Sell - Enabled
Max Sell Amps - 0 A
Load Shave - Disabled

Note:
Please see the "Enhanced Grid Support with Conext MPPT Solar Charge Controllers" section of the XW/XW+ Owner's Guide for a full understanding of the enhanced interactive mode and its association with the grid support function.
Max sell amps are dependent on whether you have permission to sell to the grid. In this scenario, we assume that you are not allowed to sell; you could leave it at default if you have approval.
When sell is disabled, a 1A buffer is drawn from the grid at all times to ensure no power is sent back to the grid.
In this scenario, we've enabled sell at 0A to remove this 1A buffer, but sell should be disabled in installations with a strict "no power back" requirement.

4. As for the MPPT60, best practice is again to start with a restore to defaults

ADVANCED settings - CHARGER SETTINGS
Ensure charge cycle is set for 3-stage, the rest of the settings are custom based on your battery

Note: Do you have 240V loads? If not, consider conversion to 120V, as split-phase requires 75% balance to effectively limit current draw from the grid in grid support mode.
