Issue:

Can an HDL breaker be converted to an HDM breaker?
Can an HGL breaker be convered to an HGM breaker?
Can an HJL breaker be convered to an HJM breaker?
Can an HLL breaker be convered to an HLM breaker?
Can an HRL breaker be convered to an HRM breaker?

Product Line:
Circuit Breakers

Environment:
Applies to unit-mount Powerpact H Frame Circuit Breakers

Cause:
Sometimes there is a requirement for a breaker that has lugs on the ON end, but with terminal nut bus pads on the load end, instead of lugs at both ends.

Resolution:
The answer is "yes", an HGL breaker can be converted to an HGM breaker by simply removing lugs and installing terminal nut inserts.
(The same answer applies converting HJL to HJM, etc.)
To understand in greater detail and to see an example, continue reading.

First, note the difference in HGL and HGM breakers as shown in the following drawing:
  • HGL circuit breaker: Lugs are factory installed at both the ON and OFF ends
  • HGM circuit breaker: Lugs are factory installed at the ON end, and Terminal Nuts are factory installed at the OFF end

To convert and HGL breaker to an HGM breaker:
-Remove the lugs from the OFF end of the HGL breaker
-Separately order a terminal nut insert kit, and install the terminal nuts in place of the lugs that were removed.
Which terminal nut kit should be selected is based on the tap required, and whether a 2p or 3p breaker (see the below table).

Example:
Convert an HGL36100 to HGM36100
Step 1: Order (1) HGL36100 circuit breaker and (1) S37444 Terminal Nut Kit (assuming standard 1/4-20 tap).
Step 2: Remove the lugs from the OFF end of HGL breaker.
Step 3: Install the terminal nut inserts on the OFF end of the breaker.
